What they share
Both AiType and Superwhisper are Mac-first dictation tools that use OpenAI's Whisper model for transcription. Both are aimed at power users who want fast voice-to-text that's better than the built-in Apple Dictation. Both have a hold-to-speak interface and paste the result into the active app. The overlap is real.
Where they diverge
The key difference is execution. AiType runs Whisper on Groq's LPU hardware, which is why it achieves ~250ms end-to-end latency. Superwhisper supports a range of backends including local models (for privacy) and cloud APIs — the local option is slower, the cloud options are comparable. AiType currently offers cloud-only processing at maximum speed.
The second difference is the AI cleanup pass. AiType runs an additional model pass after transcription to remove filler words, fix punctuation and capitalisation, and rewrite awkward phrasing. Superwhisper has some cleanup features but the depth of post-processing is more limited.
The third difference is platform coverage. Superwhisper is Mac-only. AiType works on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android.

When to choose Superwhisper
- Privacy / offline. Superwhisper's local model option keeps audio on your machine. AiType requires internet. For medical, legal, or sensitive content, this matters.
- Model flexibility. Superwhisper lets you choose which Whisper variant to run (tiny, base, large) and which cloud backend to use. Power users who want control will prefer this.
- Mac-only users who need local processing. If you're entirely on Mac and don't need Windows or mobile, Superwhisper with a local model is a strong choice.
When to choose AiType
- Maximum speed. The Groq LPU backend is consistently faster than Superwhisper's cloud backends in our testing — ~250ms vs ~300–500ms.
- Better AI cleanup. AiType's cleanup pass goes deeper: it removes filler words, rewrites awkward phrasing, and fixes grammar more aggressively. If you speak conversationally and want polished output, AiType wins here.
- Cross-platform. If you also use Windows or need an iOS/Android keyboard, AiType is the only option in this comparison that covers all platforms.
- Simplicity. AiType has fewer configuration options, which for most users means less setup friction and faster onboarding.
Bottom line
For Mac-only users who want local processing and backend flexibility, Superwhisper is excellent. For anyone who wants the fastest cloud transcription, the deepest AI cleanup, or cross-platform coverage — AiType is the better daily driver.
